A parent's guide to the NSW Opportunity Class (OC) placement test
The NSW Opportunity Class placement test is taken on a computer by Year 4 students for entry to Year 5. It has three equally weighted sections, all multiple choice: Reading (14 questions, 40 minutes), Mathematical Reasoning (35 questions, 40 minutes) and Thinking Skills (30 questions, 30 minutes). There is no writing task, and calculators are not allowed. The Department of Education publishes practice tests, which are the best place to start.
The Opportunity Class (OC) program offers placement in Years 5 and 6 for high-achieving students in NSW public schools, and entry is decided by a placement test sat in Year 4. The test is computer-based and every question is multiple choice. The three sections carry equal weight. There are no calculators or rulers, but students can use paper for working.
What each section asks
- Reading: unfamiliar texts such as fiction, poetry, magazine articles and reports, with questions on meaning, inference and vocabulary in context.
- Mathematical Reasoning: applying maths learned at school to problems that are worded or presented in unfamiliar ways.
- Thinking Skills: general critical thinking and problem solving. No previous knowledge is needed.
How to prepare
- Start with the department's own practice tests so your child sees the real layout and instructions.
- Read a wide range of texts together and talk about them, and play number and logic games.
- Add short timed sets in the last few months, and review every mistake using a worked solution.
- Practise on a screen, because the test is computer-based.
- Keep it light: short sessions, plenty of rest and no comparison with other children.
Common questions
Is there a writing test for OC?
No. The OC placement test has Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills only. The Selective High School test, taken in Year 6, includes a Writing test.
Can my child use a calculator or ruler?
No. Calculators and rulers are not allowed in the OC test, but students can use paper for working out.
How early should we start preparing?
Light preparation in Year 3 and a focused few months in Year 4 is plenty for most children. Keep sessions short and positive.
