AMEB Theory of Music Grade 5: how to prepare
AMEB Theory of Music Grade 5 builds on the earlier grades with more demanding harmony, scales, intervals and score reading. How the topics build
Theory exams cover reading and writing notation, rhythm and time signatures, scales and key signatures, intervals, chords and harmony, and musical terms. Each grade extends the one before, and Grade 5 expects accuracy in all of them at once.
Preparation plan
- Revise the foundations. Check scales, key signatures, intervals and terms from earlier grades, because errors there cost marks in every section.
- Work topic by topic. Write answers by hand, then compare them with worked solutions.
- Practise harmony slowly. Check each step against the rules before moving on.
- Use timed papers. Plan how long to spend on each section, and leave time to check.
- Keep an error log. Note whether each mistake was a rule, a slip or a presentation issue, and retry after a few days.
